Padded coffee table – Before giving away an old worn coffee table, throwing it away, or relegating it to a basement or garage, consider its possibilities. You do not have to keep it where it is if it is to saturate a room or give that room an unbalanced look. On the contrary, it could be transformed into a padded seat that fits perfectly under a window somewhere. You could also move to the side, instead of front, armchairs or sofas when you need extra capacity. An old repurposed table could be just right besides a bedroom, kitchen or family room. Start with an old coffee table you have at home or buy one at an antique store or garage sale in a basic style you like. Ignore the color that is painted on it. Do not worry scratches as you are covering the top with a cushion.
Sand the top padded coffee table and edges of the board with 150 grit sandpaper until smooth. Rub the top and edges with a dry, soft cloth or a dry brush to remove sand from the ash from the table. Choose a color of paint and fabric that you like and that will complement the colors and style of the room where the table is to be placed. Paint or stain the table and allow it to dry completely for at least 24 hours. Measure the surface of the table. Decrease your measurements by 1 inch on all sides. Cut a sheet of plywood 1/4 inch thick to match these measurements with one hand or by swinging.
Tighten the plywood sheet to the top of the board with four metal clamps. The turn table to your side. Use a drill to make guide holes through the board at eight points spaced evenly along the bottom of the board and about 2 inches at the edges of the plywood at the top. Mark the pencil top of the padded coffee table with a cloth around the edges of the plywood sheet so you know where to place the plywood sheet after covering it with the fabric. Remove the plywood sheet from the board. With a knife, cut two pieces of polyfil foam filling to match the dimensions of the plywood sheet. Place the filler foam on the plywood with a staple gun. Lay a piece of flat and right cloth (pattern side) down on a flat surface. Place the plywood board, side filler, in the center of the fabric. Fold the fabric up and around the edges of the board. Mark on the fabric covers 3 inches on the back of the plywood board on all sides. Cut the fabric at these points.
